1. Fish Frozen Halfway Through its Meal:
A fish frozen halfway through its meal Have you ever seen a fish that was frozen in the middle of eating another fish? Well, that’s exactly what two brothers found in 2016 when they were ice fishing in Indiana. They pulled out a pike that had a bass in its mouth, both perfectly preserved in ice. How crazy is that? The pike had choked on the bass, which was too big for its throat and died.
The cold water then froze them together, creating a stunning snapshot of nature’s brutality. This is not a common sight, as most fish can swallow their prey whole or tear off smaller pieces. But sometimes, they bite off more than they can chew, literally. If you’re cooking fish at home, make sure you don’t make these common mistakes. You don’t want to end up like this pike, do you?
2. Alien Eggs:
In 2015, two friends were hiking in Utah when they came across a strange sight on a frozen lake: a circular formation of white spheres that looked like alien eggs. The spheres were about the size of tennis balls and had a slimy texture. They filmed the mysterious object and posted it online, asking for explanations.
Some people suggested that it was a prank or an art installation, while others joked that it was an alien invasion. The truth turned out to be much simpler: the spheres were salt cubes that someone had laid out in a circle to create a hole for ice fishing. The salt cubes had melted into those shapes due to the temperature difference between the ice and the water.

3. Birds that froze while diving:
In 2014, a group of Norwegian researchers found a bizarre sight on a frozen lake: dozens of dead birds trapped in the ice. The birds were guillemots, which are seabirds that dive into the water to catch fish. The researchers speculated that the birds had dived into a hole in the ice, but could not find their way back out. They then froze to death in the frigid water, creating a macabre scene. This is not an isolated incident either. In 2017, more than 200 guillemots were found dead on another lake in Norway under similar circumstances.

4. Mystery of the Ice Caveman:
What would you do if you stumbled upon a caveman frozen in ice? Would you be amazed, scared, or curious? Would you think it was real or fake? That’s what happened to some visitors to the Theodore Wirth Regional Park in Minneapolis in January 2021. They found a bizarre sight: a life-sized caveman trapped in a block of ice near a frozen creek.

He had long hair, a beard, a fur coat, and an axe. He looked like he had been there for thousands of years. But who was he? Where did he come from? And how did he end up in the park? The answers are stranger than you might think. He was not a real ancient human, nor was he made of real ice.
He was a sculpture created by a group of local artists called the Leonic Art Collective. His name was Zug Zug, and he had a fascinating backstory. Zug Zug was originally made for an awards ceremony in February 2020, where he was part of a display that featured other prehistoric creatures and objects.
But after the event, Zug Zug was forgotten and left in a garage for several months. Until the artists had an idea. They wanted to create something fun and positive for people to enjoy during the pandemic and the winter. They also wanted to encourage people to explore nature and art.

5. Fish Frozen in Wall of Ice:
In 2015, a kindergarten teacher and photographer named Kelly Preheim captured an eerie image while out birding in South Dakota’s Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge. She saw a wall of ice with dozens of fish trapped in it, looking like they were frozen mid-leap out of the water. The image went viral online, sparking speculation about how this could have happened. Some people joked that it was the work of aliens or an unhinged snow queen.
But Preheim did some research and found out the real explanation from local biologists. The fish had died from a lack of oxygen in the lake due to thick ice and heavy snowfall that blocked out the sunlight. The dead fish floated to the surface and were stuck in the ice. Then, either due to expansion or strong winds, the ice sheet cracked and tilted upward near the shore, taking the fish with it. The spooky photo attracted hundreds of bald eagles, gulls, and crows who feasted on the frozen fish.

6. A Lake Deep Beneath The Ice:
Antarctica is not only the coldest continent on Earth but also the most mysterious. Beneath its thick ice sheet lies a hidden world of lakes and rivers that have been isolated for millions of years. One of these lakes is Lake Vostok, which is located about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) under the ice. It is the largest subglacial lake in Antarctica and one of the most intriguing places for scientific exploration.
Scientists have drilled through the ice to collect samples of water and sediments from Lake Vostok, hoping to find signs of life and clues about the past climate. They have found evidence of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that have adapted to the extreme conditions. They have also detected traces of methane, oxygen, and other gases that could indicate geothermal activity or biological processes.

7. Frozen but Living Alligator Things Found in Ice:
Alligators are cold-blooded animals that cannot survive freezing temperatures. However, some alligators have developed a clever survival strategy: they stick their snouts out of the water before it freezes, creating a breathing hole. They then enter a state of dormancy, slowing down their metabolism and heart rate.
In 2018, a video went viral showing several alligators frozen in a pond in North Carolina, with their noses sticking out of the ice. Amazingly, they were still alive and thawed out when the weather warmed up. This is not the first time alligators have been seen doing this trick. They have been known to survive harsh winters by hibernating in burrows or underwater.
8. Perfectly Frozen Fox:
In 2017, a hunter in Germany found a shocking sight on the frozen Danube River: a fox encased in a block of ice. The fox had fallen through thin ice and drowned in the cold water. The hunter cut out the ice block with the fox inside and put it on display outside his hotel as a warning to others about the dangers of thin ice. The image went viral online, sparking sympathy for the poor fox and awe at nature’s cruelty. Some people joked that it was an alien or an unhinged snow queen who froze the fox. But others saw it as a reminder of how extreme weather conditions can affect wildlife.
9. Wolf Head:
In 2018, a local man in Siberia found a severed head of a wolf on the banks of a river. The head was huge, measuring about 40 centimeters (16 inches) long, and had fur, teeth, skin, and ears intact. It turned out to be the head of an ancient wolf that lived about 40,000 years ago, during the last ice age. The wolf was about twice the size of a modern wolf and belonged to a subspecies that is now extinct. It was one of the oldest and most complete wolf specimens ever found. Scientists are studying its DNA and brain structure to learn more about its evolution and behavior.
10. An Airplane Buried in Ice:
In 1952, a US military plane carrying 52 passengers and crew members crashed into a glacier in Alaska. The wreckage was buried under snow and ice, and no survivors were found. For decades, the plane remained hidden from sight, until 2012, when a team of researchers spotted some debris on the surface of the glacier.
They recovered some human remains and personal items, such as dog tags, wallets, and clothing. The search for the rest of the plane and the victims continues to this day. The plane was part of a secret mission during the Cold War, and some believe it was carrying a nuclear bomb that may still be buried in the ice.
