Apple may be preparing a MacBook that could completely change the top of its laptop lineup, but that does not necessarily mean it will be a change worth celebrating. The rumored MacBook Ultra is expected to sit above the MacBook Pro as Apple’s new premium laptop, potentially offering an OLED display, touchscreen support, a thinner design, a redesigned display cutout, and more powerful hardware. On paper, that sounds like everything MacBook fans have been waiting for. But once you look closer, the story becomes much less exciting. This information is also featured on 9to9trends’ YouTube channel, so be sure to check it out.

MacBook Ultra

Instead of giving the existing MacBook Pro the major improvements customers have been asking for, Apple could simply create another product, place it above the MacBook Pro, and charge even more money for it. That could leave the regular MacBook Pro feeling outdated without actually making it a bad laptop. And the strangest part is that the first MacBook Ultra could reportedly launch with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, meaning Apple’s brand-new luxury laptop could arrive using processors that are already associated with the previous generation.

For a company that constantly markets Apple Silicon as one of the biggest reasons to upgrade, that would be an awkward way to introduce a supposedly revolutionary machine. The MacBook Ultra could end up being a perfect example of Apple’s current strategy: take features that should eventually reach the normal MacBook lineup, put them inside an expensive new product, give it an Ultra name, and convince customers that they need to spend thousands more.

The MacBook Pro Could Suddenly Look Outdated

The biggest problem with the MacBook Ultra may not even be the laptop itself. The problem could be what it does to the MacBook Pro. For years, the MacBook Pro has represented the top of Apple’s traditional laptop lineup, especially for professionals who need more performance, better displays, more ports, and stronger cooling. But instead of completely transforming the MacBook Pro, Apple could now create another level above it. That means customers who already spend a huge amount of money on a MacBook Pro could suddenly find themselves looking at a machine that offers features they cannot get on their existing laptop.

This is where the Ultra strategy becomes frustrating. Apple would not necessarily need to make the MacBook Pro bad. It would only need to make the Ultra more attractive by keeping certain features exclusive to the more expensive model. If the OLED display, touchscreen, thinner design, new camera cutout, and other major changes are reserved for the Ultra, Apple could create an artificial gap between the two products. And once that happens, customers may start asking why the MacBook Pro costs so much if Apple itself considers the Ultra to be the real flagship. The MacBook Pro could become the expensive laptop you buy when you cannot justify the even more expensive laptop.

The Chip Situation Makes Little Sense

The processor situation could make the first MacBook Ultra even harder to understand. Reports suggest Apple could use existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips inside the first-generation Ultra. If that happens, Apple would have a very unusual flagship product. You could potentially walk into an Apple Store, look at the latest MacBook Pro and the brand-new MacBook Ultra, and discover that both machines are using chips from the same generation. The Ultra would obviously have other differences, but the processor is still one of the biggest parts of the Mac experience. If Apple is charging a major premium, customers will naturally expect the newest and most powerful technology available.

Instead, the first Ultra could arrive while Apple is apparently skipping the expected M6 Pro and M6 Max generation and preparing for the M7 Pro and M7 Max generation later on. That makes the timing even stranger. The second-generation MacBook Ultra is reportedly expected in 2027 with M7-series technology, which means the first model could have a relatively short window before a much more advanced version appears. For customers spending Ultra-level money, that could be an uncomfortable situation. Nobody wants to pay a premium price for a supposedly revolutionary laptop and then watch the next generation arrive with the chip upgrade that should have made the first model feel truly new.

Apple Could Make Its MacBook Lineup Even More Confusing

Apple has traditionally been good at making its product lineup relatively easy to understand. You have different MacBook models, different chip levels, and different prices. But this rumored strategy could make everything considerably more complicated. Apple is reportedly preparing an entry-level MacBook Pro with the standard M6 chip, while the Ultra could use M5 Pro or M5 Max hardware, and future Ultra models could jump to M7-series chips. That means customers could end up comparing laptops based not only on model names and prices but also on different chip generations.

A newer MacBook could technically have a newer chip generation while an Ultra model has an older Pro or Max chip. For normal customers, that is a ridiculous amount of information to process before buying a laptop. Apple has always benefited from its simple branding, but adding another premium tier could make the MacBook family start looking more like a confusing collection of overlapping products. And the more complicated the lineup becomes, the easier it is for customers to spend more money simply because the product sounds more premium.

OLED Could Finally Bring a Major Display Upgrade

The display could be one of the few areas where the MacBook Ultra genuinely feels different. Apple is reportedly preparing an OLED panel for its high-end MacBook, with Samsung Display rumored to be involved in supplying the screens. That would be a major shift after years of Apple relying on mini-LED technology in its high-end MacBook Pro models. OLED has some obvious advantages. Individual pixels can turn off completely, producing much deeper blacks and stronger contrast.

HDR content can look more impressive, dark scenes can appear cleaner, and the overall image can have a more premium appearance. But even here, the upgrade is not as simple as Apple could make it sound. Mini-LED still has advantages, particularly when it comes to very high brightness in demanding HDR situations. So OLED is not automatically better in every category. More importantly, Apple could use OLED as another reason to push the Ultra price even higher. Instead of eventually bringing OLED across the MacBook Pro lineup at a reasonable price, Apple could reserve it for the most expensive model and make customers pay heavily for the privilege.

The Touchscreen MacBook Controversy

Then comes one of the biggest changes: touchscreen support. Apple has spent years avoiding a touchscreen MacBook while competitors have offered touchscreen laptops for a long time. The company has instead argued through its product strategy that the Mac and iPad serve different purposes. But now Apple could reportedly be preparing to put a touchscreen directly onto the MacBook. That creates an awkward question: if touchscreen laptops were supposedly unnecessary, why is Apple changing its mind now? Apple already experimented with touch interaction through the Touch Bar, but that never became the major revolution the company appeared to hope for.

Now the company could be preparing to bring touch directly to the main display. That could be useful, especially for creative applications, quick controls, drawing, browsing, and certain productivity tasks. But it also creates another problem. macOS was designed primarily around a keyboard, mouse, and trackpad. Apple will need to make touch interaction useful without turning macOS into an oversized version of iPadOS. If the experience feels half-finished, the touchscreen could become another expensive feature that looks impressive in advertisements but does not fundamentally improve everyday use.

A Touchscreen Means Apple Needs a Better Hinge

A touchscreen MacBook also creates a very basic hardware problem. When you touch a laptop display, you physically push against it. That means the screen can move, shake, or tilt backward. On a normal MacBook, that is not a huge issue because most interaction happens through the trackpad and keyboard. But if Apple suddenly wants people to touch the screen regularly, the hinge needs to become much stronger.

Reports suggest Apple could be working on a reinforced hinge and display structure specifically for this reason. That makes sense, but it also shows how one new feature creates another engineering problem. Apple cannot simply put a touchscreen on the current MacBook Pro and call it finished. It has to redesign other parts of the machine to make the feature practical. And if that results in more weight or a thicker structure, it would clash with another major rumor surrounding the Ultra.

Apple Wants It Thinner, But What Gets Sacrificed?

The MacBook Ultra is rumored to be thinner and lighter than the current MacBook Pro. That sounds attractive, but thinner laptops always come with trade-offs. The 2021 MacBook Pro became thicker because Apple brought back ports, improved cooling, and created more room for battery capacity and powerful components. Those changes were welcomed by many professional users because they made the MacBook more practical. Now Apple could be moving in the opposite direction with the Ultra.

If the laptop becomes significantly thinner, Apple will have to carefully balance cooling, battery life, ports, speakers, structural strength, and performance. Something has to fit inside that smaller body. Apple cannot simply remove physical space and expect everything else to remain the same. And if the company removes ports again in pursuit of a thinner design, professionals could once again be forced to carry adapters and hubs. That would be particularly frustrating on a machine positioned as Apple’s ultimate professional laptop.

Goodbye MacBook Notch, Hello Dynamic Island?

Apple could also finally get rid of the MacBook notch. Reports suggest the company may replace the current cutout with something closer to the Dynamic Island found on newer iPhones. Instead of simply sitting there as a black area inside the menu bar, the new cutout could interact with software and system functions. In theory, this sounds more useful. But there is an obvious irony here. Apple created the notch in the first place, and now it may be preparing a new feature to make that same design decision feel less annoying.

The MacBook notch has been criticized because it occupies space in the menu bar, especially when there are many menu items. Turning it into a Dynamic Island-style feature could make it more visually interesting, but it does not change the fact that Apple introduced the original problem itself. It could become another example of Apple taking something customers complained about, giving it a new name, and presenting the solution as a premium feature.

The MacBook Ultra Price Could Be the Real Problem

And finally, there is the price. This could easily become the biggest issue with the entire MacBook Ultra concept. Apple is reportedly positioning this machine above the MacBook Pro, which means it is unlikely to be cheap. Add an OLED display, touchscreen technology, a redesigned body, a stronger hinge, a new display cutout, premium components, and powerful processors, and the price could climb very quickly. Apple’s existing high-end MacBook Pro models are already expensive enough for many buyers.

If the MacBook Ultra starts significantly above them, Apple will be entering a market where the question is no longer whether the laptop is powerful enough. The question becomes whether the extra features justify spending potentially thousands more. For professionals who genuinely need the performance, there may be a reason to consider it. But for everyone else, the Ultra could simply become another luxury product that looks incredible on paper but makes less financial sense once you actually compare what it offers.

MacBook Ultra Launch Date and Price

The first-generation MacBook Ultra is rumored to launch sometime between October and December 2026, although Apple has not officially confirmed a release date. The exact price remains unknown, but because the Ultra is expected to sit above the MacBook Pro, it could start significantly higher than Apple’s current high-end MacBook Pro models and potentially become the most expensive MacBook Apple has ever sold. The second-generation MacBook Ultra is reportedly planned for 2027, with Apple’s M7-series chips expected to finally bring a newer processor generation to the lineup.

Until Apple officially confirms the product, all of these details remain rumors. And that may be the biggest reason not to get too excited yet. Apple could be preparing a genuinely impressive MacBook, but if it launches with older-generation chips, an enormous price tag, and a collection of features that should eventually become standard across the MacBook lineup, the MacBook Ultra could end up feeling less like the future of the Mac and more like Apple’s newest way to make customers pay extra for it. Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you in the next one.
